Surgery Outcome en Patients with Waardenburg Syndrome Facial Features

Common facial features found in most Waardenburg Syndrome patients include abnormal wide eyes without hypertelorism, broad nasal root, palpebral ptosis, cleft lip and palate, and various cranio-maxillary deformities. Surgery attempt will be indicated for cosmetic or functional reasons if dental mal-occlusion is present. A total of 9 patients with Waardenburg Syndrome features aged between 8 to 22 years old were reviewed in a period between February 1999 to December 2008.Five patients presented type I WS and 4 the Type II WS. Surgery procedures performed included frontal-orbital remodelling, canthopexy, rhinoplasty and maxillary surgery. Correction of the inner canthal distance, enlargement of the orbital cavity and the good relationship between both maxillas were the priorities achieved. Nevertheless the need to correct functional problems of Waardenburg Syndrome should be aimed at improving the self esteem or other problems related to cosmetic appearance of the patient.
