The Built Environment is being shaped by a synergy of contemporary building design issues including Occupational Health Safety, Sustainability, Accessibility, Facility Management, Industrial Relations, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Future Proofing, Flexibility and Construction Procurement Hybrids. These issues are not mutually exclusive, often overlap and cross inform. Human Factors and Ergonomics have informed the procedures and regulations in building design for Sustainability and Occupational Health Safety, and the contemporary challenge is to present more tangible and concrete built examples and case studies displaying these requirements and procedures. Without these tangible examples, the building design community will fail to understand the relevance of these issues and typically respond with no more than a simplistic regulation conformance approach. Participants designing for the Built Environment including Owners, Occupants, specialist consultants including Human Factor Consultants and Ergonomic Consultants need to assist the design team in a non-partisan and collaborative design development procedure. Relevance requires encouragement of simplified outcomes, realistic risk scenario identification and recognition that designing for Sustainability and Occupational Health Safety should not be a chore, but be enjoyed.
