The major shortcoming and Achilles Heel of GC-MS is its inability to analyze relatively non-volatile and thermally labile compounds. This problem is further exacerbated via the often weakness or absence of molecular ions in standard EI-MS. GC-MS with Cold EI is based on GC and MS interface with a supersonic molecular beam (SMB) and electron ionization of the SMB vibrationally cold sample compounds in a fly-through ion source.
