[n the present work the cost of manufacturing (COM) of SFE extract of Brazilian Ginseng roots was evaluated Popularly know as Brazilian Ginseng (Pfaffia), is used in folk medicine as a tome and an aphrodisiac, as well as in the treatment of diabetes and rheumatism. Studies revealed that this extract has an interesting effect on memory due to its centra' nervous system depressant action with amnestesic effect in an inhibitory avoidance task. The SFE extract was obtained using supercritical CO2 plus ethanol as cosolvent. The global yield was 0.56% (dry basis, d.b..); without cosolvent the yield was 0.18% (d.b.), The gluNil yield obtained by low-pressure methanol extraction was 5 8% (d.b), nonetheless, there are severe restrictions to the use of methanol due to its toxicity For preliminary estimation of the c-i of manufacturing the extraction cycle time was assume to be equal to the length of the constatn extraction rate period (CER) and the extraction rate equal to mass transfer rate of the CER period.
