The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the process followed to reduce raw water consumption in an oilsand extraction and upgrading facility, located in Northern Alberta, Canada. To successfully reduce raw water consumption it is critical to understand where the water is used, how the water is used, and to develop alternative sources/supplies of water. A site-wide water management program was initiated in 2003 to address increasing water inventories within the tailings ponds. Results achieved to date, on-going projects as well as path forwards are presented in this case study.
