Labial salivary gland biopsy (LSG) is a minimally invasive procedure performed in patients to assess sicca complex or Sjogren syndrome, Amyloidosis of all types is diagnosed definitively by demonstration of Congo red binding material in the affected tissues. Detection of amyloid deposits in nerve biopsy is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of amyloid neuropathy. Since systemic amyloid deposition is known to occur in both AL amyloid polyneuropathy and familial amyloid polyneuropathy, we evaluated sensitivity and specificity of LSG biopsy as a test for the diagnosis of amyloid polyneuropathy Portuguese type.
