Selection of an excitation technique for a modal test is an important decision. The success of the test may well rest on the method used. In many cases, impact testing is chosen over other methods due to its ease of use rather than for technical merit. This paper examines the PCB Electric Impact Hammer's performance relative to conventional hammers and shows how it minimizes some of the more common drawbacks of conventional impact testing, including, lack of repeatability and overloads.
