This paper introduces operation principles of the new semiconductor components of PMD (Photonic Mixer Device) and OEP (Opto-Electronic Processor), as well as their applications in different fields such as industrial automation, automobile controlling, fast optical signal processing, 3D-imaging, robotics, and virtual reality for computer games. Due to the inherent sensing and mixing process of the PMD and OEP, these sensor elements can be integrated into arrays, thus implementing the task of 3D-imaging or Ultra-fast Analog and Digital OE-Multi-channel Signal Processing in spatial domain. A PMD array with 256 pixels based on CMOS technology has already been realized through an intensive cooperation among the institutes of INV and ZESS at University of Siegen, the firms S-TEC, and PMDTechnologies (founded by AUDI AEV and Prof. Schwarte). The experimental facts of the PMD array exhibits very promising future by using these photonic devices.
