Residual Pituitary Adenomas, LINAC Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Pituitary Function

The authors undertook a retrospective analysis of PF following LSRS for residual tumor after preceeding classical surgery on Pas. Methods: From 1992 to Juli 2003, we radiosurgicaly treated 15 patients with residual PA after preceeding surgery. 5 inactive PAs, 1 prolactinoma, 6 GH and 3 ACTH-secreting PAs in them were analyzed. The mean tumor volume was 1.1 cm3, the mean prescription dose 19 Gy, the mean FU 39.9 months. Conclusions: The results of these 15 patients should be treated as preliminary, because a gradual deterioration of PF can happen as late as 10 years after the RS and the longest FU period for a treated patient is currently just 121 months, but we also have another one being followed only 100 months and the other 3 ones between 48 and 51 months. The mean FU of these 4 patients was 62.5 months, the remaining 10 ones between 7 and 36 months. 5 patients then with a mean FU period of 74.2 months show on their endocrinological examinations preservation of the PF but the endocrinological cure of 9 living ones is not total. Imaging examinations of 14 living ones show no growth of the residual tumor.
