THE CATHEDRALS OF METROPOLITAN ARCHITECT KONSTANTIN TON IN MOSCOW AND TOMSK

By the development of 《Russo-Byzantine》 style was preceded the ideological doctrine promulgated during the reign of Nicholas I. His 《official nationality》, whose triad of 《Orthodoxy, nationality, and autocracy》 represented an attempt to revive the Russian past and its traditions. Because they gave specific visual content to this doctrine as a style expressive of the national spirit. The more characteristic product of this doctrine in architectural forms was a memorial Church of Christ the Savior, dedicated to the Russian sacrifice in the Napoleonic invasion and projected by architect Konstantin Ton (1794-1881). In the mid of XlXth some of Tons churches were built in Petersburg and its vicinity under the project of K.Ton in Russian-Byzantine style, as well as churches in Sveaborg, Kostroma, Saratov, Elts, Zadonsk, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnoyarsk and Tomsk.
