In 2006, Fort Dodge Animal Health was granted full licensure of Suvaxyn PCV2 for the protection of pigs against PCV2 in the United States. The vaccine contained an inactivated Porcine Circovirus Type 1 - Type 2 chimera. In early 2008, Suvaxyn PCV2 became commercially available in Canada. Recently a chimeric PCVl-2a isolate was identified by PCR in Canadian pig tissue homogenates (Gagnon et al., 2010). None of these cases were related to porcine circovirus associated diseases. PCR testing suggested agenomic mutation in the viral genome of porcine circovirus. The origin of this strain of PCV was hypothesized to be due to a natural recombination of PC VI and PCV2 in infected animals or the result of failure of the inactivation and spread of the chimeric PCV1 - PCV2 viral antigen used in Suvaxyn PCV2. As a precautionary measure, Pfizer Animal Health took the action to temporarily remove the vaccine from the market to further investigate this possibility. The objective of this study was to monitor thepresence of chimeric PCV1-2 virus in colostrum and cord serum from newborn pre-suckled pigs originated from sows vaccinated with Suvaxyn PCV2.
