Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) is an important pig pathogen that causes swine pleuropneumonia, a highly contagious respiratory infection responsible for important economic losses worldwide.1 Serological testing is commonly used in the US to prevent the introduction of subclinically infected pigs into naive populations. New diagnostic tests have been recently developed to detect and characterize APP infections. These new tools have prompted several discussions among field veterinarians regarding testing strategies and the significance of a positive result. No information is currently available regarding how these tests compare for detection of subclinically infected pigs. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of all diagnostic tests currently available for detection of pigs subclinically infected with APP using samples from experimentally infected animals.
