HUMORAL RESPONSE OF PIGS TO FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE VACCINES

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is caused by infection with an aphthovirus genus of family Picornaviridae and is one of the most contagious infectious diseases of cloven-hoofed farm animals. Many countries are endemic of FMD, including many in Africa, Asia and South America. An outbreak of FMD in Taiwan happened in March 1997, which resulted in financial losses in the millions of dollars for the Taiwanese pork industry in both export and local markets. This virus strain, O Taiwan/97, has been shown species adaptation in pigs and caused overt clinical signs only in pigs in the outbreak of FMD.
