The purpose of this retrospective study was to review the prevalence and clinicopathologic findings in small psittacines with proventricular cryptosporidiosis that were submitted to a pathology service (Northwest ZooPath) from 2000-2009. Of 153 birdsdiagnosed with cryptosporidiosis, 35 psittacine cases were identified. Twenty-nine of these were small psittacine birds with proventricular cryptosporidiosis. Clinical signs, laboratory findings, and gross lesions varied widely and were often reflectiveof multiple disease processes. Histopathological lesions seen were: mild to moderate lymphoplasmacytic proventriculitis with mucosal and glandular and ductular hyperplasia. In 2 of 4 lovebirds ,there was associated dysplastic (1) and neoplastic (1) disease found. Most birds had other diseases; it was determined that cryptosporidial infection was the cause of significant illness or death in 13 birds; in 16 birds it was likely an incidental finding. Co-infection with Macrorhabdus orhithogaster resulted inmore severe illness.
