Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) is a serious, widely prevalent, contagious disease of swine, causing distinct economic losses in pig production. An association between the disease and infections by Pasteurella multocida (Pm) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb)has been shown (1). The Pm toxin (PMT) is considered to be the principal virulence determinant in AR (2, 3), therefore protection against PMT seems a crucial - in certain opinions the only - demand for an effective AR vaccine. As a practical consequenceof this view monovalent PMT vaccines appeared on the market. On the other hand, Bb possesses a range of potential virulence determinants that might have a role in the pathogenesis of AR, at least by assisting the colonisation of the nasal cavity by Pm. In the present experiment the degree of passive protection in piglets born from sows vaccinated with a commercial monovalent PMT vaccine was compared to that vaccinated with a combined Bb/Pm vaccine (Ingelvac~(R) DART).
