The remediation/reclamation programme for eastern german lignite mining regions - funding and strategies for effort-minimising at the clean-up of contaminated sites

The German government is financing jointly with the four effected "Lander" the extensive remediation task of the disposal of remains of the brown coal mining and -refining industry. This includes mainly safety measures in the disused open-cast minesand residual holes, clean up toxic waste dumps, restoration of the water-balance and rehabilitation and land reclamation. While the majority of the contaminated areas with a need of action are monitored and those waste dumps, which contain harmless substances are treated in a simple way of covering, the main attention is given to those areas, which strike by then: dimension of soil and groundwater contamination. With the cleaning up of those sides two aspects have to be considered: On the one hand the difficulties in finding an appropriate way of remediation according to the needs of a later use and on the other hand the attempt of reducing the duration and the cost of the necessary remediation.
