Sustainable remediation in general terms can be defined as a remedy or combination of remedies that, among more traditional technology screening criteria, consider environmental, social and economic impacts while protecting human health and the environment. Integrating sustainability into site remediation requires a retooling of our thinking throughout the life cycle of the remedial project. This retooling requires embedding innovative and adaptive approaches at each phase of remedial decision making, starting with site characterization.
