In recent years, some research suggested that ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) may have functions against fungal attack and maybe play a role in plant defense mechanisms. The transgenic plants expressing TCS gene have been demonstrated to possess the resistance activities against virus infection. TCS expressed in E. coli showed broad-spectrum anti-fungal activities to 9 different fungal pathogen including Alternaria longipes in vitro, and the inhibition of A. longipes rate was 16.5%. When TCS combined with chitinase or glucanase or both, the inhibition rate of A. longipes was increased to 43.2% approx 61.3%. The results suggested that TCS is a candidate to prevent plants from infection of fungal pathogen.
