Retinal pigment epithelium {RPE) plays a key role in forming choroidal neovascular membrane in age-related macular degeneration. Some growth factors, especially basic fibroblast growth factor, regulate wound healing mechanisms1, and proliferation and regression of the choroidal neovascularization in experimental animal models2,3. There are few reports referring to the relationship between RPE and bFGF during this wound healing process. This study attempted to determine the mechanism by which bFGF regulates RPE cell proliferation during wound healing. We analysed bFGF localization of RPE cells using immunohistochemical methods after laser injury in vitro.
