Transformer malfunction has always been a major cause of concern for power utility companies. Temperature is one of the best-recognized indicators of health. Infrared Thermal Imaging is a standardized heat signature modeling tool. As of contemporary setting, thermal imaging has become a mature and highly regarded method of condition monitoring, in which temperature measurements can be conducted in real-time in a non-contact manner. Infrared thermography is used as a means to distinguish variations from the normal temperature range, within the transformer. Slight temperature fluctuations are appropriate, but any unusual change must be recognized, which may be a sign of possible failure and must be handled promptly. Unusually high temperatures will damage the insulation of the transformer and thereby reduce its life span. This paper outlines an approach to diagnosis, calculation of per-unit life, and impact of aging due to abnormal temperature on transformer winding which would help power utility companies for better monitoring of their valued asset.
