For electric vehicle (EV), the performance of widely used interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines is influenced by temperature variation, and the influence could be profound. During temperature variation, torque accuracy as well as the efficiency of IPM machine degrade without compensation control, which will further lead to higher energy consumption and worse fuel economy of the EV. In this paper, the impact of temperature variation on the energy consumption and fuel economy of a baseline IPM machine designed for EV application will be analyzed. Additionally, energy saving and fuel economy improvement of a proposed compensation control algorithm are shown.
