Protection of dams and the life at the downstream are utmost important factors of dam safety.Irrigation dams in Korea are usually small in size but huge in numbers. Almost 75 percent ofthe 17,500 irrigation dams in Korea will reach or exceed their 50-year design life in the next10 years. Moreover, developments of downstream side of some of these dams have beensteadily increasing. As the age of nation’s dams and their number increases, the potentialfor dam failures grows. The purpose of this study is to fi nd an optimum way to adopt the riskanalysis to the large number of irrigation dams in Korea with pre-screening and screeningmethodology, and to propose the portfolio risk analysis process for irrigation dams so that thepotential for irrigation dam failures in Korea may be reduced.
