This study examined the effects of ability of the student and group composition on achievement in reading, writing, and listening comprehension in Web-based foreign language learning in a cooperative environment. Forty-four students were randomly assigned to heterogeneous and homogeneous groups. The results of the analysis showed that group composition as well as student ability significantly exerted differential effects on the learning outcomes. The implications of these results for Web-based small group work were discussed.
