The Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) was required to evaluate alternatives to implement 117.5 MGD of environmentally, technically and economically feasible reuse capacity. The study found that land application is limited due to the urbanized nature of the community. Aquifer recharge faces several regulatory and economic challenges due to the County's geographical position between two ecologically sensitive national parks and its connectivity with the aquifer and the sunounding water resources. Reuse for the restoration or hydration of wetlands is subject to the most stringent water quality criteria contained in Florida law. Therefore, reuse will be limited to industrial applications consisting of partnerships with the private sector to provide reuse water to a nuclear power plant. The study also found that WASD has planned and developed a diverse mix of traditional and alternative water supplies to meet its forecasted water supply needs.
