LA River Flow Study: Changing Water Landscape Triggers a One Water Paradigm Shift

The Los Angeles River (LA River) Flow Study is one element of the One Water LA 2040 plan taking a holistic and collaborative approach, to consider all water resources from surface water, groundwater, potable water, wastewater, recycled water, dry-weather runoff, and stormwater as "One Water." This study evaluates considerations, assumptions, adaptive management approaches (in/off channel storage), and areas of future study necessary to determine optimal flow conditions in the LA River. The existing and planned changes in the management of wastewater and stormwater flows in the LA River Watershed will impact discharges to the river. The possibility of greater efforts in water recycling, water conservation, groundwater management, and improvements in surface water quality can cause additional impacts. Future management of the LA River requires a greater regional understanding and adaptive strategies of how changes in flow may impact water supply, water quality, habitat, recreation, and aesthetics.
