Corrosion of structural members is a great concern when the structural integrity of ships is considered. In this report, the effect of grooving corrosion on statistic strength of four points bending tests has been conducted with one half-scale model specimens simulating hold frames of Cape-size bulk carriers. Artificial grooving was made at the fillet welded joints of the model specimens. In the test condition, the fillet welded joints with grooving are subjected to compression induced by patch loading and progressive lateral deflection of the web plate was observed after reaching the ultimate strength. It has been revealed that the width and depth of the grooving affects the ultimate strength. When the region with compressive stress at the grooving of the fillet welded joints is small, the reduction of ultimate strength due to grooving was not observed. Following the experiment, FE analyses have been also performed to simulate the deformation behavior observed in the experiment.
