A Macro-Mobility Scheme for Reduction in Handover Delay and Signaling Traffic in MIPv6

Mobile IP, a macro-mobility solution, is often criticized for its handover latency, and the number of registration messages it generates to support mobility. Several micro-mobility protocols have been defined as improvements - Hierarchical Mobile IP, Fast Handover and Cellular IP, etc. While these micro-mobility protocols help in reducing handover delay, they bring along the requirement of some sort of predefined security association between various entities. Implementing these may be difficult, and Mobile IPv6 actually tried to eliminate such requirements. In this paper, we propose certain modifications to Mobile IPv6 by introducing the mobile agents to take care of the mobility management. Moreover, the scheme does not assume any security association between entities belonging to different networks. We also present simulation results to prove the performance improvement.
