Land surface schemes are model representations of complex natural systems. Such schemes are by their nature conceptualisations of the underlying processes and they rely on various model parameters to simulate the evolution of model variables, often by combining empiricisms and physical equations developed through observations at the small scale. To improve model predictions, land surface schemes are routinely calibrated to fluxes and variables measured at the plot scale. This makes predictions at the regional scale quite difficult
