Selection of MSW landfill site by means of the analytic hierarchy process

This paper shows an example of the application of a rational method, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), to select a MSW landfill site among four alternatives for a main city located in the Pantanal area in mid-west Brazil. AHP methodology and fundamentals are presented, the region and the prospective sites are characterized by means of a multi-referential database, and the application of AHP to the problem is explained. The selected area confirmed a previous choice based on geological issues.
