A drum (1) for the application of semi-finished products within tyres for vehicle wheels comprises a central core (14) defining a geometric axis (X) of the drum (1) and a plurality of sectors (19) circumferentially distributed around said geometric axis (X). Each sector (19) comprises a first portion (20) radially movable with respect to the central core (14) and two second portions (21) extending axially away from an axial end edge (20a) of the first portion (20). Primary driving devices (23) cause a radial translation of the first portions (20) away from the central core (14) from a contracted position towards an expanded position. Driven driving members (34) are operatively connected with the primary driving devices (23) and the second portions (21) of the sectors (19), in order to cause a movement of the second portions (21) away from the central core (14) after the attainment of the expanded position of the first portions (20) of the sectors (19).
