The switching fingers may operate in two or three states or positions and cooperate with a single source of operation to achieve a method of operating the engine in the corresponding two or three modes. Modes can include cylinder deactivation, main event or lost motion braking, auxiliary modes including LIVC and EEVO. The follower for the engine valve train utilizes an adjustable support assembly that eliminates the possibility of partial meshing during operation. A lever meshing member or latch is disposed for movement in the follower body and interacts with the lever to provide a constant contact geometry. The latch may support the lever in one or more precise positions, or it may rotate the lever free from the latch for full lost motion, such as in cylinder deactivation applications.
