1906. Hollingworth, E., [Wyman, H.]. Jan. 27. Loom dobbies; shedding-levers. Single-acting dobby mechanism is mounted at one end of the arches or top rails of the loom frame. The heald shafts 36 are connected by cords 33, passing over pulleys 34, to a series of segmental levers 28, which are pivoted, as shown, on a transverse rod 29. To the levers 28 are pivotally connected hooks 22, 23, which pass loosely through loops in needles 17, 18. The needles 17, 18 are actuated in the usual manner by cards passing over a card barrel 13, to push back those hooks which are not to be engaged and pulled down by a lifter bar 24 to form the upper shed. The axis of the card barrel 13 is mounted in bearings carried by the forked ends of sliding rods 10, which are reciprocated by connection with two-armed vibrating levers on a rockshaft 2, and the barrel 13 is rotated in the usual manner by a hook lever 15. The lifter bar 24 is guided in curved slots 25, and its ends are connected by rods to the lower arms of the vibrating- levers on the shaft 2. Springs 37 pull down those heald shafts 36 that are not raised, until notches 281111, on the peripheries of the corresponding levers 28, are caught by a retarder bar 38, which is guided in curved slots 39, and has its ends adjustably connected by rods 40 to the upper arms of the vibrating levers on the shaft 2. These levers are vibrated by a connecting-rod which is moved up and down at regular intervals by some driven part of the loom, so that the bars 24, 38 are moved away from and towards one another. The engagement of the retarder bar 38 with the notches 281111 in the levers 28, and the downward movement of the said bar, will raise the shafts 36 which have been pulled down by the springs 37, to close the shed. In a modified arrangement, the needles 17, 18 are placed vertically and the hooks 22, 23 horizontally.
