An Implement for Rolling and Harrowing Land, and Sowing Seeds.

15,783. Rickerby, J. July 16. Rollers, land; harrows; seeds, sowing; manuring. -A brush harrow and apparatus for sowing seeds or manures are combined with an ordinary roller. The barrow and sower are placed before or after the roller, or one in front and one behind, the sower being before or after the harrow and above or below the shafts. Pressure may be put upon the harrow by means of a lever, and the sowing- apparatus may be driven from the roller by chain, spur, bevel, or friction gearing. Either the harrow or the sower may be detached or thrown out of work, and the driver may ride or walk. Fig. 1 shows the preferred form of the apparatus. The brush harrow 5 is provided with steel tines 7 and is secured by rods 6, 8, 10, the rods 10 and the plates 9, to which the rods 8 are connected, being perforated to allow of adjustment. The harrow is put in or out of action by means of the lever 13, which is connected to the rods 10 by means of the cranked shaft 11 and is held down, when required, by a hook 14. The spindle of the brush sower 18 is driven by means of the friction drum 24, spurgearing 23, 22, chain-wheel 21, and chain 20, the chain-wheel on the spindle being in a compartment in the centre of the box 18. The spindles of the toothed gearing are carried by movable bearings secured in a bow frame 27 pivoted to a bracket 33, on which is also pivoted a lever 29 for the purpose of raising or lowering the drum 24 out of or into contact with the roller. The lever 29 is connected with the frame 27 by a fork 28 and is provided with a spring catch 31, which engages with a notched segment 32. A scraper 34 is provided to clear the path of the friction drum, and mechanism may be employed to keep the chain 20 tight.
