27,975. Stockall, J. J. Dec. 21. Calculating-apparatus; time-checking apparatus for workmen. In a machine for computing and registering workmen's times, the motion of a computing-train is governed by a clock. The spring barrels of the clock and train are shown at 45, 46, Fig. 1, respectively, a pivoted lever 50 engaging with pins on the wheel 47, with a pallet 51 lifted by the minute-wheel 52, forming the escapement. The computing-train gives motion to the flexible or other shaft x, and thence to the shafts g, 1, 4, Fig. 6. These shafts are connected by crown-wheels to spindles d, l, s, carrying pointers and capable of slight axial motion. The spindles d, l, s have feathers fitting grooves in the type rings h, p, u, and make a revolution in one, twenty-four, and forty-eight hours respectively. The edge of the piece 9 rests in grooves in the rings h, p, u, and is connected to the piece 6 and the sliding bars 7. The rings h, p carry type dividing them into sixty and twenty-four parts respectively. The ring u may carry the words " correct " and incorrect." Either the spindles or the rings can be pushed forward according as the computing-handle 18 is raised or the dial-printing handle 12 lowered. An inked printing-ribbon is rolled on spools on the spindles 23, and passes before the dials. When either handle is moved, one of the spindles 23 is rotated and the printing ribbon moved across the dial, by an arrangement of levers and ratchet-wheels. When the ribbon has been unwound from one spool, a thick portion of it catches and moves a lever 41, causing the direction of the winding to be reversed. Springs 27 prevent the ribbon from being strained. A card having printed on it minutes, hours, and days is placed in the slot 19, and adjusted in height by the handle 22. Impressions of the dials are then taken, and, at the conclusion of the work, of the pointers. The words "correct" and "incorrect" are provided so that the pointers may not be printed first and the dials later with a view to defraud. If time has to be deducted for meals &c. the wheel 58 is added, revolving once in twentyfour hours. It carries a groove 59 corresponding to a definite interval of time, and, when the lever 62 falls in this groove, the wheel 47 is locked. The wheel 58 may be adjusted so that this may occur at a pre-arranged time. The Provisional Specification states that the escapements of a number of such machines may be controlled electrically or otherwise by a master-clock at a distance. The machine may be modified to indicate the wages due.
