16,406. Metzler & Co., and McInerny, C. F. W. July 17. Automatic instruments.-Automatic players for pianos and organs are provided with two valve or ventil boxes controlled by a manual stop-board, which comprises a stop for effecting quick forward silent winding of the music sheet, when it is desired to pass over part of the music, and two other stops for admitting reduced vacuum pressure to the playing-pneumatics of the treble and bass ranges respectively to effect soft playing. The valve boxes are arranged beneath the pneumatics and are connected to air passages, the ends of which are normally closed by the stops, which are arranged on a stop-board above the boxes. The treble valve box is shown in section in Fig. 5. A port 10 leads to the treble playing-pneumatics and is normally connected directly to the vacuum reservoir through a valve opening 12 and port 36. By depressing the soft treble stop, air is admitted through a passage 4 to a purse 30, shown in dotted lines, which depresses a valve 31, cutting off atmospheric pressure from a passage 32 leading to a purse 33, which collapses and closes the valve passage 35. The port 10 is thereby cut off from the full-vacuum port 36, and receives only a reduced vacuum from a port 19 leading to a spring-controlled governor, which gives a soft effect. The bass stop governs in the same way a similar valve box controlling the bass pneumatics. The silent-winding stop controls three air-passages as shown in Fig. 4. When this stop is depressed, air enters a passage 1 and expands a purse 20, Fig. 5, depressing a valve 14 which admits exhaust to a purse 13, the collapse of which closes the valveopening 12 and connects the port 10 to the atmosphere through the opening 17. The treble pneumatics are thus cut off from exhaust. The passage 2, Fig. 4, leads to the bass valve box where the same effect is produced, and the passage 3 leads to a separate pneumatic which effects the admission of full vacuum pressure to the winding-motor.
