470,404. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R. Feb. 13, 1936, No. 4367. [Class 7 (iii)] The spherical combustion chamber of a compression ignition engine communicates with the cylinder through similar parallel or slightly inclined cylindrical passages F, in a hot plug C. The axis of the fuel injector D lies in a particular plane and at a certain perpendicular distance from the centre X of the combustion chamber, the axis of the fuel jet meeting the wall of the combustion chamber at a point situated near the orifices of the passages in the plug. The passages are preferably arranged so that the air streams through them blend into a common stream before reaching the injector. The direction of the fuel jet may be such that the main portion of the fuel is carried by the rotating air agains t the hot plug. The combustion chamber may be arranged in the cylinder head or at the side of the cylinder and it may be offset from a radial plane containing the cylinder axis. The invention is applicable to engines in which the whole or only part of the combustion space is formed by the spherical chamber. For starting purposes, the combustion chamber is provided with a heating plug E. Specifications 371,025, 384,340, 431,345, and 439,426 are referred to.
