'[Class 123(ii)] In a Cornish &c. boiler comprising an outer shell A, Fig. 2, dished end plates B, and furnace tubes C, each hole b in the plates B is formed of greater diameter than the respective furnace tube end received thereby and is connected to the latter by an intermediate ring or short tube E. The inner end eSP1/SP of the ring E is preferably welded to the edge of the hole b in a spigot-and-socket manner, as shown, and its outer end e is contracted to embrace the furnace tube to which it is welded or riveted at f. In a modification (not shown) the end c of the furnace tube C is enlarged to fit the ring E which is made cylindrical and is butt-welded around the hole b.
