A device which can be used as a telephone directory, dictionary &c. comprises (1) a series of trays 3 each having on an exposed part thereof a first index as shown in Fig. 2, by which a tray corresponding to a first letter of a reference, e.g. a subscriber's name, may be selected; (2) a number of turnable sheets 13 e.g. of plastic material attached at 11a to each tray in overlapping formation; (3) a second index along narrow parts 15, Fig. 5, of the exposed edges of the sheets which may be differently coloured for vowels and consonants whereby a sheet or sheets corresponding to the second letter of the reference may be selected; (4) a third index along wide parts 16 of the exposed edges of the sheets whereby a sheet corresponding to the third letter of the reference may be selected and (5) a notebook 14 between each pair of sheets with a stepped index corresponding to that on the tray and containing information pertaining to the references. By opening a selected notebook at a page corresponding to the first reference letter, the information required is obtained. Each tray 3 is provided with side plates 12, Fig. 3 (not shown), a hinged end-piece 9 and a hinged cover 5. The trays 3 may be held in a book-shaped easing 2. The indexes are arranged so that combinations of letters which do not occur in words or names are omitted.
