[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for agitating an agglomerate mass of particulate materials and mixing them with a fluid stream, as fruit into cake batter or rubber crumb into foamed latex, comprises an inclined rotating cylindrical container 10 having an open bottom and closed by a fixed plate 23 having a discharge aperture 26. The container is rotated eccentrically, being secured by a cap nut 17 on a drive shaft 16 eccentric to the container axis. The discharge aperture 26 is elliptical, angularly displaced from the lower point of the cylinder, and adjustable by a shutter 27. The discrete particles fall into a metering device 11 which may comprise a worm 30 having a helical flight 31 of varying inclination engaging in slots 32 in a disc 33 (see Specification 653,185). The material then falls into the upper end of a mixing chamber 35 into which the fluid component is pumped under pressure through a port 13 and they are mixed by a rotatable pegged stirrer 41, 42 and discharged at 14. The preferred inclination of the rotary cylinder 10 is 40-55 degrees ; it may alternatively rotate about its own axis at a constantly varying speed or have an internal agitating rib. The wetting device 11 may be a spur gear pump or one with co-operating lobed rotors. The flow of solid material may be controlled by weight by mounting the apparatus on a load cell to measure the rate of flow from the apparatus and controlling the welding device manually or automatically.
