The vessel has an inner and outer hull, the hold being partly bounded by the inner hull and contng. an independent, self supporting tank of laminated thermal insulation construction, separated by a gap from a second laminated shield of similar material fixed to the inside walls of the inner hull. Esp. the insulated walls are made of panels with a fixing system allowing for minor thermal expansion/contractions and based on glass fibre reinforced plastic shells filled with foamed plastic thermal insulation. Cheaper to construct than tankers in which the LNG is stored under pressure.
