Mould for continuous casting copper billets - where water flows from base of mould onto the cast billet

The mould is provided with a cooling jacket with side inlets for a coolant (e.g. water) flowing between the mould wall and the jacket and leaving the mould via a cone at the base of the mould so the water flows onto the billet as the latter leaves the mould. An additional wall is located in the cooling jacket and fitted with ribs so that many channels are formed and the water is forced to travel upwards, through the ribs, forming laminar flow and then travelling out via the cone. The ribs pref. exceed 17 in number, with height 10-60 mm and even distribution round the additional wall. Two diametrically opposed water inlets are pref. used and the cross-section area of the outlet cone is pref. less than 0.9 times the total inlet cross-section area. Simple construction with uniform distribution of the coolant and thus uniform cooling of the billet.
