Mixtures of cis-9-and cis-11-tetradecenyl acetate - sex feromone for male members of adoxophyes orana in orchards

Traps for Adoxophyes orana, a harmful insect which rolls the leaves of fruit trees are prepd. contg. a mixture of cis-9- and cis-11-tetradecenyl acetate. These 2 cpds. act synergistically and form together a sex-feromone which attracks the male members of the species. The pref. ratio of the two cpds is 0.01-10 to 10:0.1 and esp. 50% of the cis-9- cpd. The trans-derivs. decrease the activity of the cis derivs. and must not be present at =15%. Traps are prepd. from pref. transparent material such as celluloid in the shape of a tunnel and the mixture is placed therein as a soln. in e.g. n-hexane contained in pref. a polyethylene capsule. The solvent evaporates quickly and the vapours of the feromone penetrate slowly the walls of the trap. Other methods may be to adhere the feromone to sticky material coated inside the trap or by saturating the area of the orchard with the sex-feromone by spraying in very dilute solns. in low-boiling hydrocarbons etc.
