Heat exchanger for military aircraft - has series of baffles to prevent escape of liquid and encourage droplet deposition

The heat exchanger (1) has header plates (2, 3) supporting tubes (4). The heat exchanger is kept full of water through a pipe (8) from the tank 10). This water cools the air flowing from the inlet (5) through the tubes (4) to the outlet (6). Any vapour formed from the heated water rises up the pipe (11) and flows through an opening (16) into the upper part (A) of the tank (10). The upper part of the tank (A) contains a series of baffles (17, 17a, 17b) which encourage deposition of any liquid droplets intrained in the water vapour. A relief valve (23) allows the water vapour to escape if the pressure rises above that of the atmosphere. This is particularly applicable to military aircraft performing high speed manoeuvres.
