1460497 Bookbinding K BALL 29 April 1974 [6 June 1973] 18745/74 Heading B6A Hot melt adhesive is held in a melting pot 4 suspended between a pair of endless, parallel chains 10 which are driven by a motor 9 so as to convey the pot beneath a stationary clamped pile 15 of sheets, a driven, heated applicator roll 6 having a roughened surface applying the adhesive to the edges of the sheets in the pile. Heating elements are embedded in the roll and melting pot and are arranged so that the adhesive can be held at an elevated temperature below operating temperature when not required for immediate use. A cooling blower 7 having a nozzle 8 is provided on the pot. The chains are interconnected by parallel rollers 11 which contact the pile edge and cross-bars 12 which do not. The clamp 2, which is open at the bottom, may comprise wicket and socket bars (22), (20), Fig. 3 (not shown) for clamping sheets with edge perforations. A baffle may be used to deflect the applicator roll so that the rear vertical edge of the pile is not glued. Alternatively, an electromagnetically operated cam may be provided to pivot the clamped pile out of contact with the roll at appropriate times. Pile jogging means and a secondary heating plate may also be provided.
