As shown the drill is continuously rotated by interengagement of pinions 4, 5. The rear end of spring 12 is located on an internally threaded collet 14 mounted on a fixed bolt 15 the collet being rotatable, and hence axially movable, by a thumb wheel 19. In a modification the spring holder 20 rests against one face of a rotatable triangular member 21 each face of which is at a different distance from its axis of rotation.
