The automatic stacking machine is partic. for crockery and comprises a horizontal or sloping feed mechanism and a grip, inverting and stacking mechanism. On starting up, the conveyor belt can first be set in motion, and the incoming dish actuates a first switch, moving the grip and inverting mechanism into the engaged position. A second switch is actuated by the dish when in position for engagement by this mechanism, and a third one is operated by the mechanism swinging into the engaged position. The latter then swings into the stacking position, detected by a fourth switch and the grip is only released when a fifth switch has detected that the stack support is correctly positioned. The number of items in the stack is restricted by a sixth switch.
