Biocidal disinfectants and cleansers are prepd. by allowing an oxidising agent, capable of releasing I2 from an iodide, to act on an inorganic iodide, at Ph =7, in the presence of water and of =1 substance (I), capable of forming complexes with I2. One or more wash-active cpds. are opt. added. Pref. (I) are polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyoxyethylene gp-contg. cpds. and/or amphoteric substances, partic. cationic cpds. The oxidising agent is esp. a peroxide, partic. H2O2 or an adduct thereof. The inorganic iodide may be KI, NAI, NH4I or HI. The I2-complexes, known as iodophoric cpds., are water-soluble and can be used in skin disinfectant compsns., for humans and animals, and also in cleansing and disinfecting surgical instruments. The complexes are prepd. without heating, with optimum consumption of available I2 for complex formation and without risk of corrosion or health-hazards.
