PURPOSE:To attain high conversion precision by permitting a context reference part to refer to the preceding and following parts of an existent sentence. CONSTITUTION:Input part 1, equipped with say a ''kana'' keyboard, outputs a corresponding ''kana'' character code string when an operator key-inputs a sentence to be inputted. Decision part 2 decides whether the ''kana'' character code string outputted from input part 1 corresponds to a new sentence or the modification of an existent sentence. For this decision, section information is inputted from the keyboard, for example, and states of respective parts in the device are detected. Context reference part 3 is actuated when decision part 2 indicates the modification of the existent sentence. Then, the contexts before and after the modification point of the sentence stored in the memory part are referred to and the reference information is supplied to ''kana''-''kanji'' conversion part 4. While referring to this, conversion part 4 converts the ''kana'' character code string from input part 1 to ''kanji''. Thus, high conversion precision can be obtained.
