Comfortable travel is ensured by lateral suspension in normal operation. Also if necessary when no air spring is operative, in a secondary system of suspension for railway passenger coaches, esp. combined lateral and vertical suspension system. Use is made of a pair of air springs (30,32), and devices (26,28) for connecting these to the wagon body and opposite sides of the cradle (24), at angles running inwards to the centre of the body. The air springs may extend upwards and inwards from the cradle towards the body centre, at angles between 14 deg. and 25 deg. from the body's vertical central plane. Each air spring may incorporate an emergency spring system, which becomes operative only if an air spring fails.
