Sources of error connected with fluid surface tension in regard to the indicator are eliminated through both probe and indicator (4,5) being entirely in the fluid, the indicator having so little lifting force in the liq. that the fluid surface (6) above the probe is not capable of being broken. The fluid used is silicon oil, and the indicator (6) is of plastic such as polyethene with a density near to or completely coincident with that of the fluid. The probe is of other plastic material, such as polypropene or polymethylpentane with a density only slightly below that of the fluid. The fluid is transparent, as is the vessel (1), which has a scale so that the indicator position can be read against it both through the vessel wall and the liq. (Provisional Basic advised week 83/44)
